For the cases that will not allow laparoscopic surgery, there will be open surgery to remove the cyst. This would require a lot more downtime and recovery. However, the surgeon would still attempt to leave as much of the ovary as possible. The possibility of harmful side effects regarding either surgery is very low and recovery time for both types of removal is generally a month. 

Just remember to follow the discharge orders provided by the doctor. Generally, the removal of a dermoid ovarian cyst will not lead to infertility. There is still the possibility for conception without any other negative health complications to interfere with becoming pregnant. An entire ovary might have to be removed during surgery, but keep in mind that a second ovary is fortunately still available to possibly become a mother when ready.
